Stork Industrial Complex

The former Stork factory complex is the most tangible reminder of Hengelo's industrial identity. Parts of the 19th-century red brick factory buildings survive and have been converted into a creative district with studios, restaurants, and cultural venues. The scale of the original complex gives you a sense of how dominant the factory was in the city's life.

Walk through the complex to see the industrial architecture and the adaptive reuse that has given it new purpose. Industrieplein area, central Hengelo.

A story
The Stork machine factory was the industrial heart of Hengelo for over a century, producing textile machinery, steam engines, and eventually components for the German war effort during the Second World War — which made it the target of the 1944 bombing that destroyed much of the city centre. The surviving factory halls now house apartments, offices, and the Twentse Welle museum.
