Hengelo Markt

The Markt is the commercial heart of Hengelo, a pedestrianised square surrounded by shops, cafes, and restaurants. The postwar reconstruction architecture isn't going to win awards, but the square has good energy and a market takes place here several times a week.

The surrounding streets have some decent independent restaurants and the standard Dutch chain cafes. It's a pleasant place to sit with a coffee and watch the city go about its business.

A story
The city centre was largely destroyed in a Allied bombing raid on 6 October 1944, targeting the Stork factory complex that produced German war equipment. The postwar reconstruction left the Markt with a functional but architecturally modest character — the buildings around it tell the story of a city rebuilt quickly and practically, not beautifully.
