Holwerd's two main draws are immediately obvious: the ferry to Ameland and the Wadden Sea at your feet. The village is a gateway, not a destination — but what it gives access to is genuinely special. The mudflats stretching to the horizon at low tide are an eerie, open landscape unlike anything else in the Netherlands, and the island ferry is a proper little adventure even if you only cross for the day.
