The ferry to Ameland runs year-round, so Holwerd is accessible in any season. That said, most visitors come between April and September, when wadlopen tours operate and the weather is mild enough to make the most of the landscape.
Spring and early summer are ideal for mudflat walking: tidal conditions are favourable, the light is good, and wading birds fill the flats on migration. Guided tours typically run from May through September, subject to tidal timing.
July and August are the busiest months. Ferry queues build on summer weekends and during Dutch school holidays — if you're bringing a car, book well in advance. Foot passengers have more flexibility.
Autumn is underrated. The tourist crowds drop away, the light turns golden over the flat Frisian farmland, and the Wadden Sea mudflats become a major stopover for migratory birds — up to ten million pass through the Wadden Sea in a single autumn. Serious birdwatchers come specifically for this.
Winter is quiet. The ferry still runs, but wadlopen season is over and the landscape can be raw. On a still day, the emptiness of the coast has its own austere appeal.
