Kaffekongen — the Coffee King — is a small cafe on Storgata that the locals reliably recommend above the chain coffee shops. It has the usual Nordic cafe setup: good espresso, excellent pastries, mismatched furniture, and a clientele that includes both ferry commuters and people settling in for the morning with a laptop. Prices are slightly lower than the chains despite the better quality.
Open from early morning, it is a sensible place to start the day before hiking or catching a ferry. The seating fills up around 9 am on weekdays; arrive earlier for a table or be prepared to take your coffee to go.
