Bodø Cathedral

Bodø Cathedral is a post-war reconstruction, built after German bombing destroyed the previous church in 1940. The result is a modest but dignified building in the centre of town, notable for retaining the original medieval tower — which somehow survived the raid — alongside a thoroughly modern nave. The interior is sparse in the Lutheran tradition but worth a look for the stained glass and the organ, one of the larger instruments in northern Norway.

The cathedral stands on Domkirkegata and is easy to combine with the Nordland Museum a short walk away. Services are held most Sundays; on weekdays the building is generally open to visitors during the day. The contrast between the postwar functionalism of the nave and the surviving medieval tower is quietly striking, a physical record of what the bombing cost this city.

A story
The medieval church that once stood here was destroyed in the German bombing of May 1940. The current cathedral, completed in 1956, incorporated a surviving piece: the tower — the only structure that withstood the attack. Standing in the modern interior, you look up at a spire built from the ruins of a city that was essentially erased in a single night.
