Bodin Church

Bodin Church, in the Bodin neighbourhood about 5 km east of central Bodø, is a medieval stone church with thirteenth-century origins — far older than the rebuilt city centre around it. The building was expanded in later centuries, but the original stone core survives, giving it a solidity and historicity absent from the post-1940 town. The whitewashed interior is typical of Norwegian Lutheran churches, with carved wooden fittings and a good altarpiece.

Getting here on foot or by bike takes around 30 minutes from the city centre via the coastal path. The church is worth combining with a ride east along the Bodøhalvøya peninsula — the cycling infrastructure is good and the views back toward the city, with the Lofoten Wall behind it, are excellent.

A story
Bodin Church is one of the oldest surviving stone buildings in Nordland, with core walls dating to the thirteenth century. It escaped the 1940 bombing largely because it sits some distance east of the city centre — the medieval parish that built it preceded Bodø itself by several centuries. The church is still an active parish, which means visitors are guests at a living building rather than a monument.
