Harstad's main draw is its Arctic setting: the midnight sun from late May to mid-July, the northern lights from autumn through spring, and the dramatic coastal scenery of Hinnøya island and the surrounding fjords. The Trondenes peninsula just north of town concentrates the history — a medieval church, a WWII fort, and a museum all within walking distance of each other.
