Lofoten Museum

The Lofoten Museum, at Storvågan a kilometre west of Kabelvåg, is the central historical museum of the islands. It traces the cod fishery from medieval Vågar through to the great seasonal migrations of the 19th and 20th centuries. The site includes a restored 1815 trader's house, a reconstructed rorbu cabin of the kind rented to seasonal fishermen, and a long collection of historic open boats.

It is open daily in summer and on reduced hours in winter. A combined ticket with the Espolin Gallery and the Lofoten Aquarium covers all three sites and is the way to do Storvågan in one visit.

A story
The museum stands on the foundations of medieval Vågar, a royal trading town founded in the 12th century and once the largest settlement in northern Norway. Ongoing excavations have uncovered fragments of the original wooden church, trading buildings, and personal items from a community that grew rich on stockfish bound for Bergen and southern Europe.
