Vågan Church (Lofoten Cathedral)

The white wooden Vågan Church stands on a slight rise above the harbour and dominates the view of Kabelvåg from any approach. The neo-Gothic exterior is plain but enormous; inside, the high vaulted nave and rows of pews give a clearer sense of why it was built so large.

It is still a working parish church. Services are held on Sundays; on weekdays in summer it is usually open to visitors. The graveyard at the rear, with weather-beaten headstones tilted at every angle, is one of the more atmospheric corners of the village.

A story
Built in 1898 and seating 1,200, Vågan Church is the largest wooden church in northern Norway — a deliberate over-scaling intended to hold not the village population but the thousands of fishermen who poured into Vågan during the cod season every year. It has been nicknamed the Lofoten Cathedral ever since, although it has never been a cathedral in the formal sense.
