Bunes is one of Norway's most dramatic beaches: a long arc of white sand on the open Atlantic coast, backed by near-vertical rock walls rising several hundred metres, with the granite peak of Helvetestinden (Hell Peak) watching over it. The only way to reach it is by a short passenger ferry from Vindstad, which is itself reached by ferry from Reine — the inaccessibility is what keeps it unspoiled.
From the Vindstad landing, a marked path crosses the island in about 45 minutes to reach the beach. There are no facilities. Swim with caution — the Atlantic current is strong and the water is cold even in summer. On a clear day in late June, with the midnight sun hovering just above the ridge, this is an extraordinary place.
