Moss Jernverk (Ironworks)

The Moss Ironworks operated from the seventeenth century through the industrial age, and the remains of the ironwork complex along the Mosselva river give the old town quarter its industrial character. The ironworks was one of the reasons Moss grew into a town at all — the combination of the waterfall that powered the machinery and the sheltered harbour that moved its products made this stretch of the Oslofjord coast commercially significant long before tourism arrived.

The old ironworks area has been partially redeveloped but retains its historic bones: the river, the mill races, and some of the old buildings. It is worth walking through the Mossosen area for the industrial heritage atmosphere, particularly if you combine it with a visit to the Convention building nearby.
