Books

The Romsdalen and its peaks have a long climbing literature in Norwegian. In English, the best companion reading is on the wider Norwegian Campaign of 1940 and on the country's mountaineering tradition more broadly.

Troll Wall — In 1965, a young British climbing team led by Tony Howard pulled off the first ascent of the Troll Wall — at the time, the longest big-wall route in Europe. Howard's book is the participant's account of how it happened: the recce trips, the bivouacs on the face, the rivalry with a parallel Norwegian team, the politics of who got up first. It is also a portrait of post-war British climbing at the moment it left the home crags and started taking on alpine-scale objectives. Reads as much like an adventure novel as a memoir.
