Åndalsnes calls itself the mountaineering capital of Norway, and the surroundings back up the claim. The Trollveggen, Europe's tallest vertical rock wall, the serpentine Trollstigen pass, and the Romsdalseggen ridge are all within a short drive or hike of town. The town itself is small — most attractions are the landscape, the road, and the climbing tradition that grew up around them.
