The Rauma Line is a 114 km branch railway that climbs from Dombås through the Romsdalen valley to the terminus at Åndalsnes. It is regularly listed among the most beautiful rail journeys in Europe. The route follows the Rauma river past cliffs, waterfalls, and the Trollveggen, then drops to the fjord. From the right-hand side of the carriage you get the best of the wall views; the train slows at key spots.
For most visitors arriving by train, this is the experience. But the line also runs a "Rauma Railway" tourist service in summer that does the scenic stretch with commentary — a worthwhile add-on if you have an extra half-day in town. The Åndalsnes station itself is small and right on the harbour, walking distance from everything.
