On foot: Tvedestrand is a small town and the centre is entirely walkable. The harbour, the main street and most eating and drinking options are within a few minutes of each other. The steep streets climbing from the waterfront are part of the charm, though they can be tiring with luggage.
By boat and kayak: For the islands and outer skerries, you need to get on the water. Kayak rental is available from the harbour in summer, and local operators also offer guided trips for those who want a navigator. If you have access to a small motorboat, the archipelago is easy to explore independently — fuel and mooring are available at the marina.
By car: A car is useful if you want to explore the surrounding oak forests and inland countryside, or to make day trips to nearby towns. The town itself has limited parking and no particular need for a car within it. Car rental is not available locally; the nearest options are in Arendal or Kristiansand.
