Getting There

By train and bus: Tvedestrand is not on the main railway line, but is easily reached by public transport via Arendal, which is. From Arendal, a local bus covers the 20-kilometre journey to Tvedestrand in around 20 minutes. From Kristiansand, the journey by train to Arendal followed by the bus takes roughly an hour in total. Check Vy (the national rail operator) and Agder Kollektivtrafikk for current timetables and connections.

By car: Tvedestrand sits just off the E18 coastal motorway, which connects Oslo (roughly 3.5 hours) and Kristiansand (under an hour) along Norway's southern shore. The approach from the E18 drops down through forest into the fjord, giving a good first view of the town from above. Parking is available near the harbour, though it fills quickly on summer weekends.

By air: The nearest airport is Kjevik (Kristiansand Airport), about 70 kilometres to the west. Kjevik has connections to Oslo and Bergen as well as some seasonal European routes. From the airport, a combination of airport bus and train or bus to Arendal, then onward to Tvedestrand, takes around 1.5 to 2 hours. Renting a car at the airport makes the journey simpler.
