The Chapel of Our Lady, attached to the main basilica at Jasna Góra, is the inner sanctum of the pilgrimage complex and one of the most atmospheric religious spaces in Central Europe. The icon of the Black Madonna hangs above the altar, its face dark with age and reverence, dressed in embroidered golden robes and crowned. The chapel walls are hung with thousands of votive offerings — crutches, jewellery, military decorations, photographs — left by pilgrims over centuries.
Access is free, but the chapel fills quickly when the silver curtain over the icon is due to be raised (usually at 6am, noon, 3pm, and 9pm). If you visit at these times, expect crowds and a wait. The raising is accompanied by a fanfare and a prayer, and the transformation in the congregation — the intake of breath, the prayers murmured in a dozen languages — is something quite outside ordinary tourist experience. Come early in the morning for the 6am raising if you want to see it with a smaller, more contemplative crowd.
