Częstochowa

Polish pilgrimage city dominated by Jasna Góra monastery and the Black Madonna icon.

Częstochowa is Poland's spiritual capital, home to the Jasna Góra monastery and the Black Madonna — an icon that has drawn millions of pilgrims for over six centuries. The hilltop monastery complex dominates the city and is worth visiting regardless of your beliefs; the fortified walls, the treasury, and the sheer fervour of the pilgrims are remarkable.

The city itself is a medium-sized industrial town that does not have much to detain visitors beyond Jasna Góra. The main avenue, Aleja Najświętszej Maryi Panny, runs from the train station to the foot of the monastery hill and has a pleasant enough stretch of cafes and shops. Most visitors come for the day from Kraków or Warsaw, about two hours by train in either direction.
