Great Armoury

Gdansk's most extravagant Renaissance building, now an art school

One of the finest Renaissance buildings in Poland, the Great Armoury was built between 1600 and 1609 to a design by Anthonis Opbergen. The facade is a riot of ornament — obelisks, cartouches, stone figures, and carved friezes stacked over four storeys. The building originally stored the city's weapons and ammunition; today it houses the Academy of Fine Arts.

Stand back far enough to take in the whole facade at once. The detailing is extraordinary even by the standards of a city full of well-restored baroque architecture. It sits on the corner of Targ Weglowy and Waly Jagiellonskie, a few steps from the Golden Gate.

A story
The Great Armoury was so magnificent that during the Second World War, photographs of its facade were used by Polish architects as key references for the reconstruction of the old town. The building survived relatively intact — one of the few originals left standing.
