Toruń Cathedral

The Cathedral Basilica of Saints John the Baptist and John the Evangelist is a massive Gothic brick structure that has dominated Toruń's skyline since the 14th century. It is one of the largest churches in Poland and one of the most important examples of Gothic brick architecture in the region.

The cathedral's most prized possession is the Tuba Dei (God's Trumpet), the largest medieval bell in Poland, hung in the tower since 1500. The interior contains the original baptismal font where Copernicus was christened, as well as medieval stained glass, carved choir stalls, and a series of tomb effigies. The tower can be climbed for views over the old town and the Vistula. The cathedral is still an active parish church; check service times if you plan to visit on a Sunday morning.

A story
The Tuba Dei bell, cast in 1500 and weighing over 7 tonnes, is the largest medieval bell in Poland. It is rung only on major religious occasions and the sound carries across the Vistula. The baptismal font below, where Copernicus was christened in 1473, makes the cathedral one of the most historically layered spaces in the city.
