Things to Do

Toruń rewards a full day's walking. The medieval old town is compact enough to cover on foot, and almost every street in the UNESCO-listed core contains something worth stopping for. The Teutonic Knights Castle ruins on the Vistula bank are a good starting point. The Copernicus House on Kopernika Street is the birthplace museum for the astronomer — small but well done. The Old Town Hall houses the District Museum, which covers the city's history from its Teutonic Order origins to the present.

The Living Museum of Gingerbread runs hands-on baking sessions where visitors make their own pierniki — worth booking ahead in summer. The Leaning Tower near the city walls is a quirky detour. The Toruń Cathedral contains the Tuba Dei, the largest medieval bell in Poland, and the baptismal font in which Copernicus was christened.
