Powiśle (roughly "below the escarpment") is the neighbourhood that runs between the Royal Route and the Vistula riverbank. It was a working-class area for most of its history and was only lightly developed after the war. Since around 2010 it has become Warsaw's most desirable neighbourhood: the Elektrownia Powiśle complex, the Copernicus Science Centre, the University Library Garden, and the Warsaw University Library are all here.
The riverbank terraces in summer are packed from late afternoon; the neighbourhood behind them has independent coffee shops, wine bars, and restaurants at every price point. The Vistula beaches begin at Powiśle's southern edge.
