Warsaw's relationship with the Vistula was distant for decades — the river was treated as a border rather than an amenity. Since the 2010s, the embankments on both banks have been transformed. On the left bank, the Powiśle and Solec areas have developed riverside bars and terraces. On the right bank (Praga side), sandy beaches appear in summer, lined with beach volleyball courts, hammocks, and simple bars.
The contrast with Warsaw's urban intensity is striking — within ten minutes of the Royal Route, you can be sitting on a sandy bank watching the sunset over the city, having paid about the same for a beer as you would at a Polish milk bar. The beaches are unofficial and seasonal, arriving naturally when the Vistula is low.
