Kasprowy Wierch

Cable-car mountain at 1987m with summer ridge walks and winter skiing

The summit cable car from Kuźnice on the edge of Zakopane to Kasprowy Wierch (1,987 m) is one of the classic Central European mountain experiences. From the upper station, a ridge walk leads east to the Świnnica saddle and west toward the Slovak border, with views over the High Tatras on clear days. The border itself runs along the ridge — you can stand with one foot in Poland and one in Slovakia.

In winter, Kasprowy Wierch offers the most reliable snow in Poland, typically from November through April. The runs are long and varied, from straightforward blues to demanding blacks in the Gąsienicowa bowl. In summer, the mountain is busiest before 10am — if you can get the first cable car up, you will have the ridge largely to yourself. Book tickets in advance online during summer weekends and school holidays; walk-up availability can be limited.

A story
The cable car, built in 1936, was the first in Poland and remains one of the busiest in Europe during peak season. In winter, queues for the ascent can stretch to two hours even with a ticket — the ski runs down are that good, and the cable car is the only way back up.
