The pinkish twin-towered church facing Largo do Carmo was built between 1713 and 1719, with gold sent back from Brazil paying for the lavish gilded interior. Two facing altarpieces, dripping with gilt cherubs and twisted columns, dominate the nave; the side chapel of São Caetano is particularly fine.
Most visitors come for the Capela dos Ossos in the small courtyard at the back, but the church itself is worth a few minutes. Combined entrance ticket. The square outside is also one of the more pleasant in the new town for a coffee.
