Monastery of the Holy Cross

Coimbra monastery and church tied to Portugal’s first kings and Manueline carving.

The Monastery of the Holy Cross is one of Coimbra's essential historic sights, set right in the lower town rather than hidden on the university hill. Portugal's first two kings, Afonso Henriques and Sancho I, are buried here, which gives the church a national weight beyond its handsome facade.

Inside, look for the Manueline pulpit, carved tombs, tilework, and the quieter monastic spaces that survive around the church. It is an easy stop to underestimate from the square outside, but it rewards a slower visit, especially before or after climbing toward the university.
