Portugal dos Pequenitos

Open-air miniature theme park featuring Portugal's famous buildings and overseas territories in small scale

Portugal dos Pequenitos is an open-air park on the west bank of the Mondego, a few minutes from the old Santa Clara convent. Built in the 1940s, it consists of a large collection of miniature-scale reproductions of Portugal's most famous monuments — the Jerónimos Monastery, the Tower of Belém, Coimbra's own cathedral — alongside scaled-down buildings representing the former overseas territories of the Portuguese Empire.

The whole thing is slightly odd: oversized children pretending to be giants, while architecture from Angola, Goa, and Macau sits alongside Portuguese monuments in cheerful proximity. The context is complicated (the park was built as imperial propaganda), but as an experience it's genuinely curious. Popular with families, and adults tend to enjoy it more than they expect to.

A story
The park was built in the 1940s under the Estado Novo dictatorship as an educational exhibit celebrating the Portuguese Empire. Many of the miniature buildings representing the overseas territories are now seen in a different light, but the park has survived as a strange, slightly dreamlike place where adults feel too tall for everything.
