Coimbra is a university city before it is a tourist city, which gives it an energy that more visited places in Portugal lack. The university — one of the oldest in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — sits at the top of the hill and dominates everything. Below it, the old town descends through narrow streets full of students in black capes, fado bars, and medieval churches. The Mondego River frames the whole thing at the bottom.
