Things to Do

Évora rewards slow walking. The walled centre is compact enough to cover on foot, with Roman ruins, medieval churches, and 18th-century palaces turning up around every corner. The essential circuit runs from the Praça do Giraldo, the main square, up to the Roman Temple and Cathedral, then down to the Igreja de São Francisco and its unsettling Chapel of Bones.

The Frei Manuel do Cenáculo National Museum next to the cathedral has the best collection of Roman and medieval artifacts in the Alentejo. For something further afield, the Cromeleque dos Almendres — a neolithic stone circle older than Stonehenge — is a 15km drive west and completely deserves the detour.
