Forte de Santa Catarina

A small 16th-century coastal fortress positioned at the mouth of the Mondego River, where it meets the Atlantic. Built to guard the river entrance, it offers views along the coast in both directions and over the broad Mondego estuary. The fortifications are modest in scale but atmospheric — a compact reminder of Portugal's long preoccupation with the sea.

The walk out to the fortress along the riverbank is part of the appeal: a pleasant flat stroll with water on one side and the old town on the other. Better in the morning or evening when the light is right and the crowds have thinned.
