Baixa

Baixa is Lisbon's orderly downtown, rebuilt on a rational grid after the catastrophic 1755 earthquake flattened the medieval original. The Marquis de Pombal oversaw the reconstruction, and the result is wide avenues lined with neoclassical buildings, a striking contrast to the organic chaos of Alfama nearby. Rossio Square remains the social heart of the city, busy with cafe terraces and street performers. The Santa Justa Elevator, a wrought-iron neo-Gothic lift designed by a student of Eiffel, connects Baixa to the Carmo neighbourhood above and offers fine rooftop views. Rua Augusta, the pedestrianised main artery, leads down to the triumphal arch at Praca do Comercio on the waterfront. It's the city's main commercial zone, busy but essential.
