A Ginjinha

A tiny bar near Rossio that has been serving its singular product — ginjinha, the cherry brandy liqueur — since 1840. The entire operation consists of a doorway, a counter, two barrels, and a queue. There is no place to sit; you stand on the pavement with your small glass and drink it before the next person needs the space.

The ginjinha here is the standard against which all others are judged: syrupy, strong, with the sour kick of the morello cherries cutting through the sweetness. It costs very little and is an essential Lisbon experience. Open from mid-morning until late; the busiest times are early evening. At Largo São Domingos 8, a minute from Rossio.

A story
Ginjinha is a liqueur made from ginja berries (morello cherries) steeped in aguardente (a rough brandy) with sugar and cinnamon. The drink was invented or at least popularised in Lisbon in the early 19th century; A Ginjinha, which opened in 1840, claims to be the original. For 185 years, the formula has not changed: you order at the door, pay a euro or two, and receive a small glass with or without the berries ("com elas" or "sem elas").
