Príncipe Real

Príncipe Real is Lisbon's most quietly elegant neighbourhood, a hilltop district of grand 19th-century townhouses, antique shops, and a Saturday farmers market around a shaded garden. It sits just above Chiado and Bairro Alto, connected by steep streets and the Elevador da Glória funicular, and has the character of a village within the city.

The neighbourhood has attracted high-end design boutiques, wine bars, and a concentration of antique dealers along Rua Dom Pedro V. The Jardim do Príncipe Real — a small garden with a century-old cedar tree whose branches spread across most of the square — hosts the organic Saturday market and provides a shaded gathering point for the neighbourhood's residents. The Botanical Gardens are a short walk away, and the miradouro on Rua São Pedro de Alcântara gives one of the best views across the Alfama and Castelo.
