One of the great surviving picture palaces of Avenida da Liberdade, opened in 1950 with a sweeping modernist auditorium that was among the largest in the country. Saved from demolition and restored by the city, it now runs as a cultural venue rather than a commercial cinema.
It is the main home of Lisbon's film festivals — including the documentary festival Doclisboa and the queer festival Queer Lisboa — and hosts concerts, retrospectives, and screenings throughout the year. Even between events the building is worth a look for its period foyer and the largest of its three screening rooms.
