Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga

Portugal's national collection of pre-modern art, housed in a 17th-century convent in the Lapa district. The permanent collection covers Portuguese painting from the 15th century to the 19th, plus European masters — Hieronymus Bosch's Temptation of Saint Anthony is the most internationally famous piece — and an exceptional collection of Japanese Namban screens depicting the Portuguese arrival in Japan in the 16th century.

The museum is quieter than most major national collections in Europe and well worth a dedicated visit. The standout work is the polyptych by Nuno Gonçalves, a 15th-century portrait-painting of extraordinary documentary power. The building has a garden terrace with river views. Located in the Lapa neighbourhood, about 15 minutes walk from Chiado or a short tram ride.

A story
The museum's greatest treasure is the Panels of São Vicente de Fora, a polyptych painted by Nuno Gonçalves around 1470 showing a crowd of over 60 figures gathered around St Vincent, Lisbon's patron saint. The painting is a documentary portrait of 15th-century Portuguese society — monks, nobles, fishermen, and what may be the only contemporary portrait of Henry the Navigator. The identity of the figures was debated for centuries after the panels were rediscovered in 1882.
