The Odemira coastline is one of the finest in Europe, entirely protected within the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina. The beaches are long, exposed, and largely undeveloped — there are no beach bars, no sunbed rentals, and minimal infrastructure, which is exactly why they are so good.
The main beaches from north to south: Praia de Malhão (wild dunes, no facilities), Praia de Vila Nova de Milfontes (town beach with river option), Praia de Almograve (dramatic rocky setting), Praia da Carriagem, and Praia de Zambujeira do Mar (spectacular cliffs). Praia de Odeceixe, at the southern end of the municipality, marks the Alentejo–Algarve border.
Water temperatures are Atlantic — cool even in August. The summer northerly wind (the Nortada) can be strong in July and August, particularly in the afternoon. Surfers welcome it; sunbathers less so. June and September offer the best conditions for swimming.
