Praia de Odeceixe is consistently ranked among the finest beaches in Portugal and the visual argument is hard to dispute: a wide arc of pale sand backed by coloured cliffs, with a river estuary cutting across the beach to create sheltered swimming on one side and open Atlantic surf on the other. The access road from the village winds down a steep valley through cork oak forest — the approach is almost as good as the beach.
The beach is long enough that it never feels truly crowded even in August, though July and August do bring significant numbers. June and September are the ideal months: the sun is strong, the water has warmed, and the crowds have thinned. Surfers congregate at the northern end where the waves are most reliable; families tend toward the river mouth.
