Rio Mira and Town Centre

The town of Odemira sits on the banks of the Rio Mira, a river that begins high in the Serra de Monchique and winds slowly through the Alentejo before reaching the sea at Vila Nova de Milfontes. The river in the town section is wide and calm, with a pleasant riverside promenade and views of the wooded hills opposite.

Odemira town itself is a working market town rather than a tourist destination. There is a good weekly market, several local restaurants serving solid Alentejo cooking (black pork, migas, açorda), and the relaxed pace of a place that has not been reshaped around visitors. The castle ruins on the hill above the town — the Castelo de Odemira — offer views over the rooftops and the river valley.

A story
The Rio Mira is one of Portugal's few undammed rivers for much of its length south of the reservoir, and its lower valley is a landscape of extraordinary calm: the river winds through wooded banks, barely moving, reflecting the cork oaks above. Kayaking or canoeing the lower Mira — from Odemira town down to the sea at Milfontes — is one of the finest river journeys in the south of Portugal, taking about two days at a gentle pace.
