Vila Nova de Milfontes

Vila Nova de Milfontes is the main coastal town within the Odemira municipality and the busiest resort on this stretch of coast — though "busy" here means charming rather than overwhelming. The town sits at the mouth of the Rio Mira, with a long beach on the Atlantic side and calmer river beaches on the other, making it popular with families and watersports enthusiasts alike.

The old village centre is attractive: whitewashed houses, a small castle on the river point, and a handful of good restaurants and bars. In summer the population swells dramatically, but Milfontes retains its character in a way that many Portuguese resort towns have not. The beaches within walking distance include Praia do Malhão (wild dunes to the north) and the long Praia de Franquia on the river.

A story
Milfontes sits where the Rio Mira meets the Atlantic, and for centuries this confluence caused problems: the river mouth silted up unpredictably, making it unreliable for navigation. A fort was built here in the sixteenth century to guard against pirates who knew that boats sheltering in the river mouth were trapped when the bar closed. The fort still stands at the river entrance, now converted to private lodging.
