Eating Out

Angra's restaurants cluster around the main square (Praça Velha) and the harbor waterfront. Azorean cuisine is more robust than it gets credit for: the local beef is widely considered the best in Portugal, raised on the volcanic pastures of Terceira; the fish arrives daily from the Atlantic; and the local cheeses are serious. Alcatra is the island's defining dish — beef braised in wine with allspice, bay, and onion, traditionally cooked in a clay pot. It appears on most menus and the quality varies; the version served at local festivals and at older family-run restaurants is the standard to aim for.
