Igreja Matriz de Vila do Conde

The Igreja Matriz — the main parish church — dominates the central square of Vila do Conde with a Gothic facade that dates from the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The building is one of the finest examples of Manueline architecture in northern Portugal outside the major cities, with a carved doorway rich in the nautical and naturalistic ornament that characterises the style.

The interior is simpler than the exterior suggests, with a nave flanked by chapels and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. The Museum of Sacred Art is housed inside, displaying the religious objects accumulated by the parish over five centuries. Mass is still celebrated here; the church is not a museum primarily, and the liturgical life of the building gives it an atmosphere that purely touristic churches lack.

A story
The church was built in the late 15th century, at the height of Vila do Conde's prosperity from shipbuilding and trade. The town supplied ships for Vasco da Gama's second voyage to India in 1502 — a fact that the church's generous proportions reflect. The Manueline doorway, with its intricate stone rope-work and maritime motifs, was carved at around the same time as the great monasteries of Belém and Tomar, and shares their confident wealth.
