The Clock Tower is the dominant structure of the citadel, a 60-metre-high fortified gate that has served as the main entrance to the upper city since the 14th century. It was built by the medieval guilds who defended different sections of the walls, and the tower was assigned to the council — hence its civic prominence. Inside, four floors of museum display weapons, tools, furniture, and a working scale model of the medieval town.
The gallery at the top offers the best elevated view over the citadel roofscape and the surrounding Transylvanian hills. Climb on a clear morning for the light on the coloured tile roofs below. The tower is open Tuesday to Sunday; the small entrance fee includes the museum floors.
