Bârsana Monastery

Stunning wooden monastery built with traditional nail-free joinery

A wooden monastery complex in the village of Bârsana, originally founded in the 16th century by the Dragoș family. The current buildings date from the 1990s but were built using traditional Maramureș woodworking techniques — no nails, no screws, just interlocking joints. The result is one of the most impressive displays of wood craftsmanship in the region, with a soaring gate tower and a church spire visible from across the valley. The older wooden church in the village, dating from 1720, is the one on the UNESCO list.
