Church of the Epiphany

Vivid baroque church with colourful tilework on the Angara embankment

The Church of the Epiphany (Bogoyavlensky Cathedral) stands on the Angara embankment next to the city's main square and is one of the most photogenic buildings in Irkutsk. Its white and terracotta facade is decorated with coloured ceramic tiles, unusual for Siberian religious architecture, and the overall effect is more Ukrainian baroque than austere Russian Orthodox.

Built in the early 18th century, the church was closed and used as a warehouse during the Soviet period. It has since been restored and is now an active church once again. The interior has a modest but well-maintained iconostasis. The church appears in virtually every photograph of the Irkutsk embankment.
