Museum of the World Ocean

The Museum of the World Ocean is spread along the embankment of the Pregel River and is as much an outdoor fleet as an indoor exhibition. The star exhibits are the vessels moored outside: a research ship (the Vityaz), a Cold War submarine (B-413), a lighthouse tender, and several smaller craft. All are open for exploration and have been fitted out with exhibits relating to their history and the broader story of oceanographic research.

The indoor exhibitions cover oceanography, marine biology, and the history of exploration with considerable depth and good English labelling. The museum reflects Kaliningrad's identity as a major fishing and maritime city — the Soviet Union's most important Baltic naval base and trawler fleet was based here, and the exhibits on Soviet-era oceanographic expeditions are particularly interesting. Budget a full half-day to do justice to both the vessels and the indoor collections.

A story
The B-413 submarine moored here is a Foxtrot-class diesel-electric submarine that served the Soviet Northern Fleet during the Cold War. Visitors can go inside and tour the crew quarters, torpedo rooms, and control spaces — one of the best accessible submarine experiences in Russia.
