When to Go

Khabarovsk has an extreme continental climate. Summers are warm and humid, with temperatures reaching 30°C in July; winters are brutally cold, with January averages around -20°C and occasional dips to -35°C. The city is genuinely beautiful in winter — the frozen Amur, the snow-covered parks, the golden domes of the cathedral against blue sky — but it requires serious preparation in terms of clothing.

The best months to visit are June through September. Summer brings the city to life: outdoor cafes, riverbank festivities, river cruises, and long daylight hours. May is pleasant but unpredictable; October is crisp and clear with autumn colour in the parks. The Golden Autumn (Zolotaya Osen) festival in September is a good time to catch local cultural events.

Spring is muddy and brief. Monsoon rains in late July and August can be intense — the 2013 Amur flood was one of the worst in recorded history, submerging riverfront parks — though such extreme events are infrequent.
