Russian Siberian cuisine is hearty and meat-heavy — pelmeni (Siberian dumplings filled with beef and pork), shchi (cabbage soup), blini with sour cream and smoked fish. The city has a range of Georgian, Central Asian and Azerbaijani restaurants reflecting the mix of peoples from across the former Soviet Union who settled here, and these are often very good. Georgian food — khachapuri, khinkali, grilled meats — is popular across Russia and Novosibirsk has some excellent Georgian restaurants.
The central market area around Krasniy Prospekt has cheap canteen-style food. Akademgorodok has a cafes and small restaurants catering to the academic community that tend to be good quality at reasonable prices. Central Novosibirsk also has a range of modern restaurants covering European and sushi-heavy Asian cuisines that have become standard across Russian cities since the 2000s.
