Novosibirsk is not a city that rewards monuments-and-museums tourism — what makes it interesting is the combination of grand Stalinist and Soviet Constructivist architecture in the city centre, the world-class opera and ballet, and the extraordinary intellectual satellite township of Akademgorodok. Come for the cultural institutions and the sense of Siberia's particular flavour of Russian life; don't come expecting St Petersburg.
