Novosibirsk has a lively bar and cafe scene for a Siberian city, concentrated in the centre around Krasniy Prospekt and in the student areas of Akademgorodok. The standard Russian divide applies: cafes serve coffee and light food from early morning, while bars shift from daytime beer to late-night drinking by evening. Craft beer has arrived in Novosibirsk and there are a handful of decent tap rooms; the more traditional option is a Soviet-style beer bar with nothing but lager on tap and pickled snacks.
Akademgorodok has its own micro-scene, somewhat separate from the city — the bars there serve a predominantly academic and student clientele and tend to have a more intellectually earnest atmosphere, with book discussions and small concerts alongside the standard drinks. In summer, outdoor terraces open along the embankments and in the parks.
